Positioning
Elevator Pitch
flexStats turns messy spreadsheets into clean, shareable dashboards for people who don’t want to learn a BI tool. Drag in an Excel or CSV file, answer a few questions, and get a dashboard that prints to PDF beautifully.
Target Audience
The non-technical professional — someone who opens Excel, stares at a quarterly report, and wishes they could just “make it look good.” Think: operations managers, team leads, small business owners, consultants, educators, and anyone who needs to present data without becoming a data analyst.
Differentiators
- Respects messy real-world data. Unlike tools that choke on merged headers and footnote rows, flexStats detects structure issues and helps you fix them visually — no formulas, no scripting.
- Markdown-native. Your dashboards are human-readable Markdown files. When flexStats dies, your work lives on. Power users can diff and version dashboards in Git.
- Truly native on Mac. Built with Swift Charts, SwiftUI, and Liquid Glass. Dashboards feel like they belong on macOS — not a web app in disguise.
- Print-first. The primary export is a PDF you’d hand a client. Not an afterthought screenshot — a properly typeset, vector-rendered document.
- Privacy-first. No cloud, no telemetry on your data, no subscription. Your files stay on your Mac.
- On-device intelligence. Chart suggestions and column labeling powered by Apple’s FoundationModels — your data never leaves your machine.
Competitive Landscape
| Competitor | flexStats Advantage |
|---|---|
| Excel/Numbers charts | Better visual output, smarter import, no formula knowledge needed |
| Tableau / Power BI | Fraction of the complexity and cost, Mac-native, no cloud dependency |
| Google Data Studio | Works offline, privacy-first, no Google account required |
| Retool / Metabase | No database setup, works with files people already have |
What flexStats Is Not
- Not a real-time dashboard tool (no live data connections in v1)
- Not a spreadsheet replacement (we visualize; we don’t do data wrangling)
- Not a collaboration platform (file-based sharing, no team workspaces)
- Not cross-platform (Apple ecosystem only, by design)
