Smart Captions
Problem
Manually describing or tagging thousands of media files is impractical, but users need meaningful descriptions for accessibility, search, and organization.
Solution
Smart Captions uses on-device AI via Apple’s FoundationModels framework to generate natural-language descriptions and tags for media. All processing happens locally — no data leaves the device.
Tier Availability
- Free: Not available.
- Plus / Pro: Full AI captioning and tagging.
Platform Requirements
- macOS 26+ with Apple Intelligence enabled.
- Apple Silicon recommended for best performance.
UI Flow
- Load media into the grid.
- Smart Captions runs automatically in the background (or trigger manually from the menu).
- Generated descriptions and tags appear in the metadata overlay and are searchable.
Known Limitations
- Requires macOS 26+ with Apple Intelligence; not available on older macOS versions or Intel Macs without Apple Intelligence.
- Caption quality depends on the FoundationModels on-device model; abstract or unusual content may get generic descriptions.
